Initial Thoughts

Read the paragraph and answer the question below. 

Just like Liz, there are many middle and high school students across the United States who struggle with reading. Teachers in middle and high school notice deficiencies when students are struggling with comprehension. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in 2019, only 32% of eighth-grade students were considered proficient in reading in the United States. As you reflect on this statistic and the Challenge video, based on your prior knowledge, consider the following questions and type your answers to them in your Guided Notes page. You will revisit these questions and your initial thoughts at the end of the course.   

  • What challenges have you faced while working with students similar to Liz? 

 

  • How would you assess a struggling reader?

 

  • What basic skills do students who have difficulty reading lack?

 

  • What strategies work best with struggling readers?
